What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from a person's weight and height. It provides a widely-used screening tool to identify whether an individual is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. BMI was developed by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 19th century and has been adopted by health organizations worldwide as a simple, cost-free way to assess weight-related health risk.
While BMI is not a diagnostic tool, it serves as a useful starting point for identifying potential weight-related health problems. A high BMI can be an indicator of high body fatness, while a low BMI may signal malnutrition. Healthcare providers use BMI alongside other clinical data to assess a patient's overall health status.
BMI Formula
The standard BMI formula uses metric measurements: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). For imperial measurements, the formula adapts to: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) ÷ height² (inches²). Our calculator supports both systems automatically, so you can enter your measurements in whichever unit you prefer.
BMI Categories and Health Implications
The World Health Organization defines four standard BMI categories for adults. Individuals with a BMI below 18.5 are classified as underweight, which may indicate malnutrition or other health conditions requiring medical attention. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 falls within the normal weight range, associated with the lowest risk of weight-related diseases. People with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight — they carry increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea. A BMI of 30 or above is classified as obese, with significantly elevated risk for chronic conditions including heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers.
It's worth noting that BMI thresholds for Asian populations may differ; some guidelines suggest that health risks increase at lower BMI values for people of Asian descent, starting at 23 for overweight and 27.5 for obese.
Limitations of BMI
BMI is a population-level screening tool, not a direct measure of body fat percentage. Its key limitations include: it cannot distinguish between muscle and fat mass — a bodybuilder may have a "obese" BMI despite very low body fat; it does not reflect fat distribution, which is clinically important (abdominal fat is more dangerous than hip/thigh fat); it may overestimate health risk in highly muscular individuals and underestimate it in those with low muscle mass but high fat content (a condition sometimes called "normal weight obesity"); and it does not account for age, sex, or ethnicity differences in body composition.
