What is Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to maintain basic physiological functions while at complete rest — breathing, circulation, cell production, nutrient processing, and temperature regulation. Think of it as the energy cost of simply being alive. Even if you stayed in bed all day without moving, your body would still need these calories to sustain itself.
BMR represents the largest component of total energy expenditure for most people, accounting for 60–75% of daily calorie use. Understanding your BMR provides a foundation for calculating your total daily calorie needs and designing an effective nutrition plan for weight management.
The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation
Our calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, developed in 1990 and considered the gold standard for BMR estimation among healthy adults. The formulas are:
- Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) + 5
- Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) − 161
A 2005 systematic review found the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to be the most accurate formula for predicting BMR in non-obese and obese individuals, correctly estimating it within 10% for 82% of participants. It outperforms the older Harris-Benedict equation, which tends to overestimate BMR by about 5%.
Why BMR Matters for Health and Weight Management
Knowing your BMR is the essential first step in calculating how many calories you need each day. By multiplying your BMR by an activity factor (see our TDEE Calculator), you get your Total Daily Energy Expenditure — the actual number of calories you should consume to maintain your current weight. To lose weight, consume fewer calories than your TDEE; to gain weight, consume more.
BMR is also clinically relevant: it declines with age (roughly 1–2% per decade after age 20), and low BMR relative to body size can indicate metabolic disorders. Conversely, a higher BMR means faster metabolism — your body burns more calories at rest.
Factors That Affect Your BMR
Several factors influence your basal metabolic rate. Body composition is perhaps the most significant: muscle tissue burns roughly 3 times more calories at rest than fat tissue, so individuals with more lean muscle mass have higher BMRs. Age plays a key role — as we age, we typically lose muscle mass and BMR decreases. Gender matters because men generally have more muscle mass and higher testosterone levels, resulting in a higher BMR than women of the same age and weight. Height and weight both increase BMR because a larger body requires more energy to sustain. Genetics also contribute, as some people naturally have faster or slower metabolisms due to inherited traits.
Hormonal factors, particularly thyroid hormone levels, can significantly affect BMR. Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) decreases BMR, while hyperthyroidism increases it. Additionally, extreme caloric restriction can lower BMR as the body adapts to conserve energy — this is why very low-calorie diets often become less effective over time.
Using BMR for Weight Management
Your BMR provides the minimum calorie floor below which you should not go when dieting, as this can compromise essential bodily functions and trigger metabolic adaptation. A practical approach is to eat at your TDEE (maintenance calories) for a week to establish your baseline, then adjust by 300–500 calories per day to create a gradual deficit or surplus. Pair this with sufficient protein intake (1.6–2.2g per kg of body weight) and resistance training to preserve or build muscle mass, keeping your BMR as high as possible during weight loss.
